Libraries of the Future

What does the academic library of the future look like?

There are so many forms of 'social networking' now available - how do we know which are useful to us, and to our students?

Exactly! Maybe we should tread carefully in trying to use these technologies all at once. What about their relevance?

probably the ones used the most by the students perhaps thru a lib. survey

or we could experiment and see what works and what doesn't....

Can you really imagine our students looking on Second Life for assignments?

some universities have indeed done assigments on second life. Architecture is a great example because people can build things on there. Also economic students have created experimental worlds using alternative economies.

There was also the Dante's Inferno sim a little while back which was a quite brilliant way to put across the text.

I think it's best to see how other libraries use these tools and evaluate them. Who uses them well, and would they work for us in the same way?

And bear in mind that the technologies students use most often are not necessarily the same technologies they want to use for academic purposes. The email Peter sent around from Deakin Uni earlier this week had an amusingly histrionic quote from a student who said they'd lay a formal complaint if their lecturers ever tried using facebook for posting assignments etc!!

I'm going to the full-day Social Media course next week at University of Auckland. I'll report back on what I find out about how to best use social media in libraries.
